We are battling the heat and winning!

This summer brought the same surprise in extreme temperature as last Christmas did, who would have guessed we would be battling severe weather so soon?  As usual, all of Myownly's staff worked tirelessly to set up extra pools and cool down stations throughout the kennel.  We pulled out all of the fans, used ice cubes for the pets and a mixture of dry/regular ice to bring water and Gatorade to freezing temps for both employees and hot customers.  When we suffered a power outage on the hottest day we pulled out our back up generators and continued the fight!  We tossed in Yoghund frozen yogurt as a special treat, lightened up at meal times and kept a closer eye on our senior guests.  We outlasted mother nature and all of our kennel guests went out happy and healthy.  Thank you to Myownly Pet Nannies and Office Concierge, plus raves to Joel Chriscaden who orchestrated our electrical needs and helped daily while we were in high alert mode.

It seems this was not just a coincidence, this prolonged and stifling heat and last December's snow and ice storms.  This was a good wake-up call for us all.  We all need to be prepared for days of self sufficiency should the power go out.  Those of us who are able bodied and have transportation really should be checking in on friends and family to make certain they are clear headed enough to care for themselves and their pets.  The Red Cross can be called for help, as well as our kennel if you are not able to keep your fur friends cool enough at home.  This last month we have bathed and combed out, or if needed shaved dogs down to the depth of their matted hair to allow better cooling.  Sometimes your pet's hair will provide insulation, but depending on the amount of retained undercoat /pelting or matting, taking the bulk of the coat off before summer heat hits is the best idea.  This will also shorten up the months of vacuuming your home while the shedding process completes it's course.  Please call early summer and again early fall for preventative grooming of your animal friends.DSC_3415DSC_3546

Summer is really here at last!
